Recommended wear
Our BJJ classes are ‘NO-GI’ meaning you do not need any special equipment or uniforms, the camp will be conducted on purpose-built mats for safety and comfort with the restriction of any footwear upon them.
Please make sure all shorts and tops are tight-fitting and do not have any metal zippers or loose hanging accessories, in addition ensure fingers/toenails are cut short as this may cause scratches/cuts due to the close nature of the sport.
Please bring water and snacks. Session is 1:30 hour in duration.
BJJ Adult Classes
We at MFB are super excited to announce the launch of our new Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) classes every day. Any My Fitness Boutique class pack can be used to attend both BJJ and standard classes.
Techniques and sparring
Learn the basic BJJ techniques which are vital for the development to your own unique BJJ style, including the basic escapes and submissions such as the “trap and roll” “arm-bar” among many others. The workshop will conclude with some situational sparring based on the techniques covered in the workshop, however sparring is optional. Live or situational sparring is not only important in the development of your timing and reflexes but also an excellent whole body workout, as opposed to the traditional cardiovascular exercises such as jogging and cycle, sparring is not only a great cardio workout but will your increase muscular endurance, coordination, strength and even flexibility.
What to wear and how to prepare
At our BJJ classes will be NO-GI which means you don’t need to bring any special equipment or even footwear as everyone will be bare feet. Please make sure that there isn’t any loose hanging pieces/metal zippers or anything of alike on your shorts or top (ideally tight-fitting sports wear such as a rash guard although a tight t-shirt is also fine), avoid wearing any jewellery or accessories, cut your finger and toenails to prevent any cuts/scratches to yourself or others and lastly please maintain good overall personal hygiene due to the close nature of the sport. Besides a bottle of water and a face towel you don’t need to bring anything else with you for these workshops, just bring yourself and anyone else who might be interested in starting their BJJ journey with you.
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, emphasises non-lethal techniques and positional dominance to gain control over an adversary without the use of any punching or kicking. BJJ is a relatively new addition in the long history of martial arts and is still fast spread across the world today, only having come into existence around the 1920’s in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
As opposed to traditional martial arts the results are very tangible and clear to see in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, due to the simple fact that you are being tested every session under the same circumstance as that of a real-life scenario in unarmed combat (within reason). The most unique aspect is that although you can use 100% effort to replicate a real altercation, the most impressive part is that all of this can be done without leaving any lasting marks or injuries.
The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) was originally co-founded by a member of the Gracie family (founding fathers of BJJ) in order to showcase the effectiveness of the gentle art against other martial arts and fighting styles in a no holds barred tournament without the restriction of weight classes. The smallest and lightest of all the fighters was the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter who was able to overcome all his opponents in the early days of the tournament, however soon others begun to learn the Brazilian art of grappling and has since evolved into a whole new sport of its own, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts).
With the global popularity of MMA so too has Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gained fame on the silver screen and mainstream media, celebrities (Tom Hardy, Joe Rogan, Russell Brand, Guy Ritchie, Demi Lovato to name a few) around the world are championing the martial art for its therapeutic effects on people suffering from mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, to the confidence and moral values it can instil in people, and not to mention the physical benefits one will gain from practicing too.
Mike Tsengel Parry Biography
An active competitor and a veteran of numerous BJJ competitions across the globe, Mike is an IBJJF (international Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation) certified black belt, who has been training and teaching full time for the better part of a decade in order to be able to compete with some of the best in the world.
Having always been a fan of the martial arts since childhood, Mike has trained in various other styles and combat sports such as Boxing, Judo, Wrestling and Karate to name a few but Brazilian Jiu jitsu proved to be the one for him. This was for the simple reason that BJJ kept his mind active and he continued to problem solve long after the training session had ended, troubleshooting escapes, counter-attacks and failed submission attempts would keep replaying in his mind and the feeling of overcoming a lingering technical hindrance is what really makes him tick.
Mike soon found himself helping teach classes for beginners and kids due to his constant presence on the mats, the satisfaction he gained from teaching coupled with his deep-seated desire to reach the pinnacle of his abilities in the sport, drove him to choose his lifelong career as a BJJ instructor at the early age of 19. Since then, Mike has travelled from the U.K to the Americas to Japan to Singapore among countless other nations in order to compete/train with some of the very best practitioners in the sport. Mike has recently returned home to London, after having co-founded two major BJJ academies in South-East Asia to lead the BJJ program here at My Fitness Boutique.
